I don't understand people who don't have a dog. I've had dogs around most of my life.. When I moved out on my own, I became a "dog owner." I can't imagine my life without having at least one. Of course, there are many reasons why having a pet is impossible, and we certainly don't need any more abused or abandoned pets. But if you are thinking about it and still haven't done anything about it, you are denying yourself the experience of receiving unconditional love. Where else can you find that? Who else will greet you with unrestrained joy, whether you've been gone a week or just walked to the mailbox. A dog can sense your mood and adjust accordingly. If you feel like crying, he will never say "Get over it." Instead, he will curl up beside you to show you that you aren't alone, and may even lick away your tears. If you feel like dancing, he won't think you are foolish. He is likely to join right in. Talk to him and he will listen attentively as if you are the smartest, wittiest person in the world.
If you decide your life needs something added to it, I strongly encourage you first visit a local Humane Society or a rescue site. With a little patience, you should be able to find the perfect animal for your situation. You will find pure bred dogs or some of the cutest mixed breeds you can imagine. In a later blog, I will break down the dominant chacteristics of various breeds so that you find a good match.
