Maybe you'd like to go to China. You don't have any money, and you don't have a passport but you decide to go anyway. Somehow you get to China...it wasn't easy, you had to stow away in a smelling fishing boat and rough seas, but you made it. Once you got on dry land, you managed to make your way into a busy city and escape authorities. So now what?? Do you expect to get a good job and a nice house? You manage to get a job but a pretty nasty one. Doing something that most Chinese people would rather not do. But that's ok...you don't have to pay taxes and the Chinese government has a neat program where you can get free food and housing and health care. If the law enforcement agencies question you because you "look different" than the other citizens, you can go to the local news media and tell them how you are being harrassed and discriminated against. Some kind people will take up your cause and chastize the police for "not being nice to you." Time passes and you have a few kids. Since they were born in China, they are automatically citizens with all the benefits of other Chinese citizens. Plus you get more government sponsored benefits because, of course, you can't support them. Not a bad life. Now, someone has to pay for these programs that you are enjoying and after awhile, they get tired of paying and protest. No problem!! Just get a bunch of people just like you and you can march on the government buildings demanding you are being mistreated and abused. The newspapers pick up the story and after several days of headlines, the government feels guilty and decides to make you all citizens. And everyone lives happily ever after. Does this scenerio seem ridiculous to you? Well, its happening every day only not in China or any other country except ours.. In 1942, every capable man was needed for combat. At that time, the WAVES were organized to take up non-combatant roles, such as ferrying planes from the factory and training male pilots, This force was made up of women trying to help their country or seeking adventure. They were given none of the benefits afforded to the male soldiers.10,000 women volunteered; 1,102 were accepted and served. They had to pay for their flight suits and their own flight training. In fact, they were required to have an active pilot's lisence before being considered. 38 women died in action but there were no funds to take the bodies back to their homes. Usually one of their members would pay their own way in order to escort the body home. And of course, there was no reimbursement for the funeral expenses. The WAVES were disbanded in 1942 and were mostly forgotten. It was not until 1972, when the military announced that they wouldtrain female pilots into the regular service that the WAVES started petitioning for recognition.Finally, on March 11, 2010, those
